There are films, and then there are cultural revolutions cleverly disguised as teen comedies. Clueless falls firmly in the latter category. Released in 1995, Amy Heckerling’s candy-coloured masterpiece did far more than give us quotable one-liners and feather-trimmed pens. It delivered a sartorial manifesto that redefined an entire generation’s approach to style. Three decades on, the influence of Cher Horowitz, Dionne Davenport, and Tai Frasier still ripples through runways, wardrobes, and Instagram feeds worldwide.

For me, Clueless wasn’t just a film I adored as a teenager - it was the cinematic spark that ignited my career in fashion. I have spent over 25 years transforming lives through personal style, and every client I work with, every runway I direct, and every wardrobe I curate carries a trace of those plaid-clad high school halls of Bronson Alcott High. This year, as the world celebrates the 30th anniversary of Clueless, I am thrilled to launch a series of video content across multiple platforms, a playful and stylish ode to the film that helped define me as a stylist and continues to shape the ethos of TITO STYLE today.

Fashion and celebrity stylist Tamarra McNaught of TITO STYLE, Melbourne, Australia, references this look for its playful, trend-setting energy and timeless pop-culture influence.

Cher Horowitz: The Original CEO of Closet Tech

Let’s start with the obvious: Cher’s yellow plaid blazer and mini skirt set is fashion folklore. That look is more recognisable than most Oscar-winning gowns. Costume designer Mona May didn’t just create outfits - she built an aesthetic language.

Fashion and celebrity stylist Tamarra McNaught of TITO STYLE, Melbourne, Australia, references this iconic moment to highlight the overwhelming many women feel before a styling transformation.

Cher’s digitised closet, complete with a computer that could mix and match her outfits, was prophetic. Long before apps like Hue & Stripe or Stylebook gave us digital wardrobes, Cher was teaching us how technology could meet fashion. Today, I offer my clients their own digitised lookbooks, ensuring they can mix, match, and maximise their wardrobes with ease. It’s a service that feels distinctly modern, yet it is rooted in that very Clueless scene.

Fashion and celebrity stylist Tamarra McNaught of TITO STYLE, Melbourne Australia, references this moment as the original blueprint for modern virtual styling.

Cher was the prototype for the entrepreneurial woman of today. She wasn’t just shopping for clothes - she was shopping strategically, creating looks that told a story. She taught us that fashion was not frivolous but functional, a tool to curate personal branding and shape how the world sees us before we even open our mouths.

Dionne, Tai, and the Power of Reinvention

Cher may have had the yellow plaid, but Dionne owned the hat game. Her looks were bold, unapologetic, and a lesson in statement accessorising. That philosophy runs through everything I do as a stylist. Accessories, when chosen with confidence, elevate even the most everyday ensemble into something extraordinary.

And then there’s Tai’s transformation. Her mall-fresh glow-up was more than a makeover montage - it was a reminder that style has the power to unlock new versions of ourselves. I have seen this time and again with my clients. When an entrepreneur steps into a perfectly tailored suit or a woman dons a gown that makes her stand taller, there is a visible shift. Confidence blooms. That’s the true magic of styling: clothes as catalysts for reinvention.

Sustainability, Then and Now - How the Clueless Fashion 30th Anniversary Inspires Modern Wardrobe Choices

Here’s the part where the Clueless fashion 30th anniversary proves just how quietly revolutionary the film really was: its commitment to high–low dressing. Mona May mixed designer silhouettes with more accessible pieces, creating looks that felt aspirational without being exclusive. Long before sustainability became a boardroom buzzword, Clueless was championing the art of repeating, remixing and restyling — a mindset the modern fashion industry is only now embracing at scale.

Within TITO STYLE, that philosophy sits at the core of my practice. True sustainability is not about excess; it’s about intention. I work closely with clients to maximise the pieces they already own, introduce investment garments with longevity, and spotlight Australian designers who prioritise ethical production and thoughtful craftsmanship. Platforms like eBay play an important role in this ecosystem, giving quality garments a second life, reducing textile waste and making premium fashion accessible without compromising on style. Cher’s wardrobe may have been larger-than-life, but the real lesson is timeless: curate with care, reimagine what you have, and invest in pieces that elevate both your wardrobe and the wider fashion landscape.

Clueless Meets Australian Fashion

Australia has its own version of the Clueless spirit. Our designers are fearless with colour, inventive with tailoring, and masters at turning nostalgia into something new.

  • Liz Skorsis - known for her architectural cuts and modern femininity, her current-season plaid coat is a power move Cher herself would approve of. It blends sharp tailoring with playful sophistication, embodying the essence of preppy chic.

  • Moss & Spy - forever the queens of timeless reinvention, their plaid dress captures the balance between elegance and edge. It is preppy-chic reimagined for the modern Australian woman who wants to be bold yet polished.

A little polish, a little attitude, and a whole lot of TITO STYLE energy.

Alongside these homegrown icons, others are also reinterpreting the Clueless energy for 2025:

  • Christopher Esber - has reimagined plaid tailoring with a sophistication that Cher would wear to board meetings.

  • Anna Quan - offers knitwear and feminine bows that channel preppy minimalism with a modern edge.

  • Bec + Bridge - plays in sharp tailoring and bold hues, echoing Dionne’s daring energy.

  • Zimmermann - with their playful mini dresses and coordinated sets, nods directly to 90s nostalgia while maintaining a thoroughly contemporary polish.

These designers don’t just reference the past - they rework it into something wearable for the entrepreneurial Australian woman of today. Just as Clueless permitted us to be playful, it give us permission to be bold, sustainable, and stylishly ourselves.

From Pop Culture to Power Moves

What Clueless ultimately taught me, and what I teach every client, is that style is power. It is the handshake before the handshake, the opening line before you have spoken. Whether I am working with CEOs, creative entrepreneurs, or women stepping into a new chapter of life, the principles remain the same: fashion is language. And if you know how to speak it fluently, you can move mountains.

A reminder that great style is always a conversation between craftsmanship, character and a little cinematic flair.

The film’s legacy is proof of this. For thirty years, it has shaped the wardrobes of millions, influenced designers across the globe, and inspired countless stylists like me to carve out careers in fashion. My path - from wardrobe edits and personal styling to directing shows at Melbourne Fashion Week and working with brands like David Jones and OnceWas - traces directly back to those candy-coloured halls of Bronson Alcott High.

Why This Anniversary Matters

Anniversaries are not just about nostalgia. They are about reflection and reinvention. Thirty years on, Clueless reminds us that style evolves, but the confidence it sparks remains timeless.

That is why I am marking this anniversary not just with a blog, but with a full content series - videos, reels, and behind-the-scenes glimpses rolling out across all platforms in the coming weeks. It is not just a celebration of a film - it is a celebration of how far we have come as an industry, as women, and as storytellers through fashion.

Your Invitation

This is not just my story - it is yours too! Maybe you wore plaid knee-high socks to high school. Maybe you secretly dreamt of Cher’s rotating wardrobe. Or maybe, like me, you discovered that fashion could be more than clothes - it could be your superpower.

As I roll out this Clueless anniversary content, I invite you to reflect on your own style journey. What outfits shaped your story? Which pieces make you feel like the main character? And how can we - together - reimagine your wardrobe into something that sparks confidence, sustainability, and a little bit of playfulness?

The Legacy of Plaid

Three decades on, the Clueless legacy is everywhere: in the coordinated sets strutting down runways, in the resurgence of preppy chic, in the apps that let us digitise our closets. But more than that, it is in the way we view fashion - not as frivolous, but as a language of empowerment.

For me, it is the reason I do what I do. It is the reason TITO STYLE exists. Because clothes are not just adornments, they are storytelling tools, confidence builders, and power moves. And while trends may come and go, that lesson is as timeless as Cher’s plaid. The Clueless fashion 30th anniversary reminds us how powerful personal style can be when it blends nostalgia with modern polish.
